Each lesson did not feel rush and the tutors stayed until the lesson is completed even if it means going over the scheduled time.  The tutors were flexible with their schedules and tailored the lessons to my language level.  

The homestay family was outstanding.  They included me in all their activities. The meals were prepared with fresh farm raised meat and vegetables. The homestay had fast, reliable Internet.

Despite my initial reservations about living with a host family in a country where I had no language skills, I was able to gain great insight into Vietnamese culture and make some contacts that I would not have otherwise made.  The host family was extremely welcoming and gracious throughout the stay.  They also helped in making suggestions for places to visit during my stay.  Breakfast and dinner were provided and offered another opportunity for cultural understanding.  

Language training was arranged through the in-country program coordinator, Robert, who found a Tagalog speaking Filipino living in Hanoi.  Due to a project I was working for the Embassy, my language and cultural classes were held the during the first and last portion of my time in Vietnam.  This arrangement worked well and allowed me to refine my language skills prior to returning to the states.  Classes were accomplished in a common meeting area, usually at a café, for three to four hours every weekday for a total of 35 hours.  At my request, we focused on speaking and listening skills.  My teacher was always well prepared and professional.  

In summary, I benefited tremendously from both the Language and Culture programs in Vietnam.  The immersion plan incorporated excellent language instruction through a local tutor and, through the host family, provided key insights into the culture that would not have otherwise been discovered.

I had one-on-one tutoring 4 times per week. I found this to be ideal. The original plan was for me to join group lessons, but I really appreciated that I was able to have private lessons. I think I improved much more than I would have in a group setting.  I don’t think it would have been easy to find a group that matched my level.
